I don't see how you boil this all down to being not possible because of religion. What specifically about these religions limits a more compassionate peaceful world? As I understand it, this is exactly the nature of Christ's teaching. Just because a large swath of people that identify themselves as Christian are 'finger-wagging blowhards', doesn't mean they'd be any different if they were Atheists or Agnostics. They might just be assholes no matter what. See Matthew 25:35-40 on Christs thoughts on the subject.
I could just as easily say that this progress is impossible because of the theory of evolution and survival of the fittest thinking, but that would be ridiculous because despite some people believing whole wholeheartedly in evolution they can still be humanists. I'd encourage you to not put large groups of people in such small boxes.
What if they were Buddhists or Hindus? Notice that I didn't name every religion? The response to my post (currently -4) is the same belligerence and myopia that I referred to in that post. It's incredible that I can post a message of hope that humankind can collectively evolve to a higher intelligence and civility, and be met with negativity.
As for the religions that I did mention, I was careful to point out that my condemnation is based on observed effects of those religions in particular, and not on the causes for those effects.
