What about KaTeX? It doesn't suit my needs (I need to use the unofficial Xy-pic extension for commutative diagrams) but few users have those constraints, and KaTeX is
significantly
faster.

I've tried it in the past. It struggled with, among other things, properly putting subscripts on variables. I plan to try it again in the future.
