I'm not trying to suggest that "they're out to get us", just that once a group gets a taste of the power that comes from suppressing speech, it can become quite addictive and the goal posts for "safe" speech can shift.

To see this dynamic played out in different circumstances, look at the Euphemism Treadmill[0] (as mentioned elsewhere in this discussion) and Purity Spirals[1]. It may be bad for business to encourage this nonsense, but as echo-chambers become less diverse, they can exert more pressure on platforms to enforce their rules for them.
