I’m going to try and use SIPS to convert them all into png first and then add to photo.app. Thanks for this pointer.

Similarly, I've had trouble getting audio files into a format that the Books app understands (for ebooks), until I found

   afconvert -v -s 3 -f m4bf filename.mp3
