The island itself does not have much in terms of resources. And it does not have a large competitive population like China or India. And it does not have the economic attractiveness like the US. And it no longer has a colonized commonwealth to exploit. Sure, London has fame, culture, and some economy. But it does feel like the last piece of a dying empire. I am often surprised when I watch videos of suburbs or rural areas in England, because it simply looks poor and trashy.
