Onion/Tor has horrendous latency and throughput. Latency is bearable, but dial-up speeds for downloading can drive one insane.

It has been a few years since I last used Tor, but even back then you could download at megabit speeds over the network. I would assume that the situation has improved, I’m surprised that you seem to report the opposite.

The speeds are usually bad because exit nodes are more rare. But Onion addresses don't go through an exit, and stay within the Tor network.
