My favourite quote is "We're not going to allow the Western Hemisphere to be used as a base of operation for our nation's adversaries". Apparently the United States' jurisdiction now covers the entire hemisphere.
I personally thought calling upon the Monroe doctrine to invade a nation in the western hemisphere and take over their resources was a tad ironic, but I'm no expert on foreign policy.
The common thing between countries and men is that all of them are not created equal. It is absolutely not ironic. The US view has been consistent that there is only one power in the western hemisphere and that is US. The US has the economy and military to make the others agree with them.
The politicians don't think they're the bad guys, or they just don't care. They're getting whatever they want.
The 30% who approve of the President also don't think they're the bad guys. They're getting what they voted for.
But his approval rating was circa 55% when he was elected, and the delta of 25% are the ones who should be asking this question. They voted for this; this is exactly what he said he was going to do. Why have they changed their minds now that he's actually doing it?
I don't really think of the first two groups as "the bad guys" any more than I think of cancer and mosquitoes as bad guys. They're just doing what they do. Democracy was supposed to protect us from them, as long as they weren't a majority of people.
The third group... they're the bad guys. They should be ashamed of themselves. And I don't think they are. I think they're planning to make the same mistakes again and again, and keep wondering why they're unhappy about it.
