FTC wants Apple News to promote more Fox News and Breitbart stories (arstechnica.com)

Fox News is an entertainment brand, not news.

From Business Insider: "A federal judge on Thursday dismissed a lawsuit against Fox News after lawyers for the network argued that no "reasonable viewer" would take the network's primetime star Tucker Carlson seriously."

I will save $10/mo if this happens.

I cannot stress enough how all "Russian" this is, especially with the backdrop of Bezos gutting the The Post.

American media's obedience in advance has been breathtaking. Even the Russian opposition media fought tooth-and-nail for years. It really stuck in Putin's craw. Here, they are just being happily extorted and forced to comply.

Shame.

What defines "equity" in these situations? How far beyond US borders would this extend, and to what extent can users indicate their preferences to sources? What does the FTC think user choices mean here?

I'm avowedly left wing, I graze right wing media lightly. I like to see other sides of my world view. That said, I depreference breitbart because it's frankly badly written. Fox I don't see, but Sky Australia and News Ltd I see a lot of.

I would be fine with Apple doing something here but not if it's heavy handed and I cannot alter the weights.

Google lets me alter weights.

I'm not sure this is the central problem I expect the FTC to regulate tbh. This feels like make-work.

“Equity” in this case is an excuse meant to make a propaganda strong-arming move sound well-intentioned to those who aren’t paying attention.
